IDLENESS, by SILAS WEIR MITCHELL Poet's Biography First Line: There is no dearer lover of lost hours Last Line: All magic gifts of joy's simplicity. Subject(s): Idleness; Laziness; Sloth; Indolence | ||||||||
THERE is no dearer lover of lost hours Than I. I can be idler than the idlest flowers; More idly lie Than noonday lilies languidly afloat, And water pillowed in a windless moat. And I can be Stiller than some gray stone That hath no motion known. It seems to me That my still idleness doth make my own All magic gifts of joy's simplicity. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...AGAINST WHATEVER IT IS THAT'S ENCROACHING by CHARLES SIMIC NIKOS AT 42 by REETIKA VAZIRANI ODE ON INDOLENCE by JOHN KEATS VAIN EXCUSE by WALTER CONRAD ARENSBERG THE GENTLE CHECK by JOSEPH BEAUMONT A DECANTER OF MADEIRA, AGED 86, TO GEORGE BANCROFT, AGED 86 by SILAS WEIR MITCHELL HOW THE CUMBERLAND WENT DOWN [MARCH 8, 1862] by SILAS WEIR MITCHELL |
