There is a love so strong it dares defy Relentless Death. From that dark mystery It reaches out to comfort us; but we, Who mourn because beloved flesh must die, Weep unaware. If only we would try To pierce the shadows, death's dark veil might be One moment liftedwe might touch or see. Instead we weep while priceless moments fly. And yet it seems that we can dimly sense A something near, intangible, unseen, A mystic source of life from which intense Vitality floods out to us. We lean To ancient dogmas, therefore little guess That love has sought to lighten our distress. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...A FRIEND KILLED IN THE WAR by ANTHONY HECHT FOR JAMES MERRILL: AN ADIEU by ANTHONY HECHT TARANTULA: OR THE DANCE OF DEATH by ANTHONY HECHT CHAMPS D?ÇÖHONNEUR by ERNEST HEMINGWAY NOTE TO REALITY by TONY HOAGLAND BROTHER GENE by EVA K.
