EMPTY ROOM, by NATHANIEL ANKETELL BENSON First Line: To brace the heart with words of sense and strength Last Line: Like gulls that mourn above the midmost sea. | ||||||||
To brace the heart with words of sense and strength Will dull the sharpness of a moment's pain, But there's one cry that wrings the whole day's length: That I shall never know your love again, That I may wake no more that curious glow Within your eyes, nor pass my finger-tips Over your golden hair, nor ever know The precious consummation of your lips. I cannot lay these down in silence dumb! For you are still the joy you found in me -- How can you sleep and never count the sum Of sorrow up and down? You cannot see My heart, an empty room where echoes come Like gulls that mourn above the midmost sea. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...OUR LADY by MARY ELIZABETH COLERIDGE THE TWINS by HENRY SAMBROOKE LEIGH ASTROPHEL AND STELLA: 49 by PHILIP SIDNEY AT THE SEASIDE by ROBERT LOUIS STEVENSON SEASIDE THOUGHTS by BERNARD BARTON IT IS FINISHED by HORATIO (HORATIUS) BONAR ON THE LOSS OF PROFESSOR FISHER by JOHN GARDINER CALKINS BRAINARD LINCOLN'S ASSASSINATION by RICHARD EUGENE BURTON OBSERVATIONS IN THE ART OF ENGLISH POESY: 10.
