TO WAR, by
First Line: O demon war! Thou hast been absent long
Last Line: While thy fierce thunder mounts unto the stars.
Subject(s): War

O DEMON War! thou hast been absent long.
In dusty caverns thou dost bide thy time,
Girding thy strength in that Plutonian clime
For fiendish coming forth with savage song.
Thy red hand is but hid. It waxes strong,
While Peace, the minstrel maid with voice sublime,
Drowns out thy mutterings with silver chime,
Enchanting all her worship-blinded throng.
She yet shall sing for many a dulcet day
In honied notes her soft, inspiring bars,
But when thou comest, War, a wild dismay
Shall seize her heart at sight of thy old scars;
And she will flee, her hair in disarray,
While thy fierce thunder mounts unto the stars.
