WHEN through the shadow thou shalt see Death smile
And greet him as the sleepless greet the light,
When thou shalt close thine eyes a little while
To open them in perfectness of sight,
Must not thy quickened spirit shrink for shame
When touched by near Omniscience to confess
How many blots of unexpected blame
Sully thy life's apparent nobleness?
But with the evil shall be manifest
Unconscious virtue that from thee hath sprung;
Good unpremeditated and unguessed,
Rich harvest of a seed at random flung.
That hour of vision shall to thee disclose
My love for thee, a wild heart's thornless rose.
