THE PINES, by
First Line: By day or night the chanting of the sea
Last Line: Can hold my heart, but pines bring peace to me.

By day or night the chanting of the sea
Can hold my heart, yet stir to vague unrest,
As if old gods came forth and called to me,
Awaking haunting memories in my breast;
But when I hear the music of the pines
Touched by the errant winds with soft caress,
Amid dark majesty of rising lines
Their whispered hope can comfort and can bless.

Through scented isles beneath their solemn height
The sunlight pours in streams of sifted gold,
Until the stars are woven with the night
A canopy of glory to unfold.
By day or night the chanting of the sea
Can hold my heart, but pines bring peace to me.
