The voices of animals, of the winds and the waves, Bear undertone of lament; "And all creation groans together," Awaiting a final event. Creation bears in her luzuriant bosom Seeds of a new universe; With joy the end of all man's afflictions -- End of the Adamic curse. In sorrow and shame does mankind struggle To lift his feet from the mire; Nor sense that God's divine intention Is written in fire: Fire of a holy and purging experience -- Preparation for peace; For which, this that we call Death, Is only release. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...A FRIEND KILLED IN THE WAR by ANTHONY HECHT FOR JAMES MERRILL: AN ADIEU by ANTHONY HECHT TARANTULA: OR THE DANCE OF DEATH by ANTHONY HECHT CHAMPS D?ÇÖHONNEUR by ERNEST HEMINGWAY NOTE TO REALITY by TONY HOAGLAND |
