GREEK SPRING; MARCH, ATHENS, 1913, by RHYS CARPENTER Poet's Biography First Line: Rainbows, rainbows! O fantastic vision Last Line: Or is it the snows again? Subject(s): Greece; Hope; Rainbows; Spring; Winter; Greeks; Optimism | ||||||||
RAINBOWS, rainbows! O fantastic vision, Colours in the clouds and sunlight on the rain, Birds from winter seas, flowers across the plain, And all the year a-tremble with a sweet and vague decision! Is it spring, is it spring, dear heart? Will the swallow be here, my heart? Or is it the snows again? Oh, the past, the past! There is winter in all of us now, The cold of a million years; The snow's in our heart and the frost's on our brow And the ice in our tears; But still we possess it, the old fantastic vision With its colours in the clouds and its sunlight on the rain, With its thoughts like birds across the storm And its songs like April gardens warm In the heat of a southern plain. Now all my soul is trembling with a sweet and vague decision; Is it spring, is it spring, dear heart? Will the singing birds be here, my heart? Or is it the snows again? | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...HOPE IS NOT FOR THE WISE by ROBINSON JEFFERS SONNET by JAMES WELDON JOHNSON SPRING FLOODS by MAURICE BARING SONNET: 9.
