NEGLECTED, by MONICA SHIPP CLINE First Line: Beside the weather-boarded shanty Last Line: Forgotten and neglected. Subject(s): Cruelty; Desolation; Poverty | ||||||||
Beside the weather-boarded shanty A gnarled old cedar tree Leans toward the crumbling chimney As friends in misery. The window panes are broken out And a crude built rocky mound Is the only makeshift doorstep From the porch floor to the ground. Could this stooped and bent old woman Drawing water from the well With heavy chain and battered bucket Be someone's mother, who can tell? Living alone in desolation Unloved and unprotected In poverty and want she lives Forgotten and neglected. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE WEALTH OF THE DESTITUTE by DENISE LEVERTOV EMPTY PITCHFORKS by THOMAS LUX FUNERAL SERVICE by EVE MERRIAM A SMALL COUNTRY by CLARIBEL ALEGRIA DOCUMENTAL by CLARIBEL ALEGRIA NOTES ON POVERTY by HAYDEN CARRUTH SONG OF TWO CROWS by HAYDEN CARRUTH PENCIL STUB JOURNALS: CHOICES by JOHN CIARDI AT LAST WE KILLED THE ROACHES by LUCILLE CLIFTON THE PRETTY GIRL OF LOCH DAN by SAMUEL FERGUSON A DIRGE FOR MCPHERSON; KILLED IN FRONT OF ATLANTA by HERMAN MELVILLE |
