The only thing to cheer me,
Beneath a heavy load,
The beauty that is near me,
The roses in my road.
A bit of new grass creeping,
A butterfly of gold,
The first spring bloodroot peeping
Through dark and pulpy mold.
When even God is hidden,
Because I will not see,
A swallow's call unbidden
Will bring Him back to me.
