THE DESTITUTE, by ROGER DE COLLERYE First Line: The destitute who owns nor stick nor stock Last Line: The destitute. Subject(s): Poverty | ||||||||
THE Destitute who owns nor stick nor stock 'Lack Penny' on all sides does closely block-- So that for wood and wear he cannot pay, But strong his hope that you will all defray Through your kind heart, at which none vainly knock. 'Neath the cold wind he crouches like a cock, Seeking your help in woes that round him flock: Then listen to his plaint, not turn away The Destitute. Great treasures he but prizes as a crock, If of his state the secret you unlock; 'Tis scant and poor--this truth will none gainsay; In every place 'tis seen as clear as day; His biting want would veriest beggar shock, The Destitute. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE WEALTH OF THE DESTITUTE by DENISE LEVERTOV EMPTY PITCHFORKS by THOMAS LUX FUNERAL SERVICE by EVE MERRIAM A SMALL COUNTRY by CLARIBEL ALEGRIA DOCUMENTAL by CLARIBEL ALEGRIA NOTES ON POVERTY by HAYDEN CARRUTH SONG OF TWO CROWS by HAYDEN CARRUTH PENCIL STUB JOURNALS: CHOICES by JOHN CIARDI AT LAST WE KILLED THE ROACHES by LUCILLE CLIFTON LOVE AND THE EMPTY PURSE by ROGER DE COLLERYE |
