GUARDIAN, by PEPITA CROUNSE First Line: Within this valley of eternal sleep Last Line: Where spirit enters immortality. Subject(s): Cemeteries; Death; Grief; Immortality; Graveyards; Dead, The; Sorrow; Sadness | ||||||||
Within this valley of eternal sleep Where, through the hours a gentle hush enfolds All thought, and sombre circling pine-trees keep Dark vigil, this bronze hooded figure holds A sense of changeless calm and far release. This chiseled strength stands guardian for her Who sleeps there through long years of lasting peace Which no rude worldliness can break or stir. This is not sculpturing of futile grief, It is a carven symbol of the soul Triumphant over life, so fleet and brief, Where all are led toward Death which points a goal Too mystical for mortal eyes to see Where spirit enters Immortality. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...SONOMA FIRE by JANE HIRSHFIELD AS THE SPARKS FLY UPWARDS by JOHN HOLLANDER WHAT GREAT GRIEF HAS MADE THE EMPRESS MUTE by JUNE JORDAN CHAMBER MUSIC: 19 by JAMES JOYCE DIRGE AT THE END OF THE WOODS by LEONIE ADAMS DOWN THE BROOK by ROBERT FROST |
