My dog lies dead and buried here,
My little Pet for five sweet years.
As I stand here, beside her grave,
With eyes gone dim, and blind with tears –
I see it rising up and down,
As though she lay in a sleeping-gown.

Forgive me, Pet, that half these tears,
Which make my eyes go dim and blind,
Should come from thoughts of love betrayed,
When I had trust in my own kind:
And Christ forgive this living breath
That links such lives with my dog's death!
