RETURN TO EARTH, by INA DRAPER DEFOE First Line: I am the cool, green earth where lovers lie Last Line: To suckle once and then return to me. Subject(s): Fields; Pastures; Meadows; Leas | ||||||||
I I am the cool, green earth where lovers lie. No mother could be kinder than am I. Their slim, young bodies merging for a breath Will never know that such is part of death. That life has lured them to this little hour To brand their souls with pain's bright, passion flower. They come to me and lie upon my heart, And I am silent, I have done my part. II I am the deep, dark earth where pulsing life Is eager for the pageantry of strife. Where worm and seed alike mature and spring Upon my breast prepared to live and sing. I let them go. It is their destiny To suckle once and then return to me. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...HUNTING PHEASANTS IN A CORNFIELD by ROBERT BLY THREE KINDS OF PLEASURES by ROBERT BLY QUESTION IN A FIELD by LOUISE BOGAN THE LAST MOWING by ROBERT FROST FIELD AND FOREST by RANDALL JARRELL AN EXPLANATION by JAMES WELDON JOHNSON IN FIELDS OF SUMMER by GALWAY KINNELL |
