RENO, SYMBOL OF THE WEST, by JOSEPHINE EATHER First Line: There is a gateway to our western land Last Line: Symbolic of the spirit of the west. Subject(s): Freedom; Liberty | ||||||||
There is a gateway to our western land, Where freedom like a flaming banner glows, Defying time-worn creed and bitter foes, Disdaining pharisaical demand, Befriending heartsick ones on every hand; It sends a glimmering of hope to those Entangled in a mesh of human woes, On mountain, plain, or even desert sand. For Reno is as glorious and free As golden eagle on Sierra's breast, Invigorating in her liberty As breath of spicy sage from rain-drenched crest; So shall this little city ever be Symbolic of the spirit of the West. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...LOVE THE WILD SWAN by ROBINSON JEFFERS AFTER TENNYSON by AMBROSE BIERCE QUARTET IN F MAJOR by WILLIAM MEREDITH CROSS THAT LINE by NAOMI SHIHAB NYE EMANCIPATION by ELIZABETH ALEXANDER |
