TWO GENERATIONS, by ZENOBIA CRUTCHER FEINEMAN First Line: Crowned with silver braids - her evening Last Line: And rock it to a military beat. Subject(s): Courts & Courtiers; Royal Court Life; Royalty; Kings; Queens | ||||||||
Crowned with silver braids -- her evening dress, Of tinted lace, designed with modesty -- Her noble brow and gentle loveliness Portray a queen in all her majesty. With hand laid gracefully on eager arm She walks in perfect step beside her king: Who sees, beholds a rapturous mystic charm -- The gift of time for sweet remembering. Her hair is neither young nor old Nor long nor short. She is not bold Although her cocktail gown is bright, Revealing -- her manner light. She seems to say, with head askew, "Oh, I will tag along with you," And trips quite gaily by his side -- Her man, with military stride. Without a conscious cause for fear She clings and holds her captive near And takes a drink with him for "pep" -- To jazz alone, they are in step. At dawn, his feet are lagging as he walks; Her vanquished mien reveals a sensed defeat: Who sees, beholds the modern ghost that stalks And casts its shade wherever lifestreams meet -- For she will rock a cradle with those feet And rock it to a military beat. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...BOTHWELL: PART 4 by WILLIAM EDMONSTOUNE AYTOUN IN PHARAOH'S TOMB by HAYDEN CARRUTH FOR THE INVESTITURE by CECIL DAY LEWIS ELEGY ASKING THAT IT BE THE LAST; FOR INGRID ERHARDT, 1951-1971 by NORMAN DUBIE L,ENVOI: IN OUR TIME by ERNEST HEMINGWAY VASHTI by JAMES WELDON JOHNSON LINES ON CARMEN SYLVA by EMMA LAZARUS TO CARMEN SYLVA (QUEEN OF ROUMANIA) by EMMA LAZARUS THE WIND-SWEPT TREE by ZENOBIA CRUTCHER FEINEMAN SPOON RIVER ANTHOLOGY: ALEXANDER THROCKMORTON by EDGAR LEE MASTERS |
