AN ILLUSION, by MARGHERITA GARDNER FETTER First Line: If I could have seen you depart Last Line: Our souls thrilled as they smiled to meet. Subject(s): Absence; Longing; Love; Separation; Isolation | ||||||||
If I could have seen you depart And known the touch of your hand, While wraiths of grief surged at my heart, Could I have waited the angel band? If I knew the celestial glen to search, The way to follow that leads to you, I'd come when the night birds from leafy perch Call through the twilight the way we knew. If my longing soul could understand Why dreams of life's visioning are no more Than an empty shell from the strand As it wails from its long-lost shore; If I tremble with love's suppressed yearning, Waiting in wonderment for the day When to my beloved's arm I will cling, While on memories' harp a faith note we play; If when the yesterdays are today, And our song of life, love's refrain; Oh! then how joyous shall be our lay, Its lilt ne'er again lost in life's pain. If it be true, death is but a Way, Then I have looked in shadowy eyes so sweet; And trembling, enrapt in a strange ray, Our souls thrilled as they smiled to meet. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE EVENING OF THE MIND by DONALD JUSTICE CHRISTMAS AWAY FROM HOME by JANE KENYON THE PROBLEM by CHARLOTTE FISKE BATES WHEN A WOMAN LOVES A MAN by DAVID LEHMAN THIS UNMENTIONABLE FEELING by DAVID LEHMAN |
