THE HILLS ARE LIKE A WOMAN, by
Last Line: The hills are like a woman!
Subject(s): Women

The hills are like a woman. The everchanging moods
Reveal themselves in sun and fogs and deeply-shadowed woods.
Touched now they are with sunshine in early morning light
Now bathed in morbid mystery, impenetrable as night;
Now croon a soothing lullaby to wand'rers from afar;
Now distant and aloof as far celestial star.

Anon they moan and whimper, heads bowed in gravest grief.
And then when tearful storms have passed, comes calm and sweet relief.
At times the hills reproach us -- cry out, "For shame! For shame!"
They show a fiery temper when timber's all aflame;
The winds roar down the canyons -- they roar and thrash and rave;
The wild-folk all seek shelter in stream or darkest cave.

And now the hills are reverent. They stand sublime, supreme;
Proclaim to all mere mortals Christ's power to redeem.
Again we find them winsome. The racing breezes play;
The flowers frolic madly; the bright birds sing so gay;
The deer graze meekly on the slopes; the creatures, great and small,
Seem bent on business of their own; and peace reigns over all.

The hills are best as mother whose loving, tender care
Guides wanton wand'rers home again from cities everywhere.
Her robes, the mighty oak and pine, a shelter are for all;
Bring health and vim and vigor to all who heed her call.
She hums and croons and sways us into a peaceful sleep;
Protects, endears, enfolds us close to her bosom deep.

Again we find them sensuous as any siren queen
Who sings, and calls us on with lovely mien serene.
And bids us dare to follow her; nor meditates, nor cares
What dangers, what calamities we enter through her snares.
Some say the hills are changeless, the same shall be alway.
'Tis false, I say. They change in mood -- that changes every day.
The hills are like a woman!
