THE DREAMS OF LONG AGO, by IMBERT GALLOIX First Line: Mine was a vernal world, delectable with flowers Last Line: -- forget, my soul, the dreams of long ago! Subject(s): Dreams; Memory; Nature; Past; Nightmares | ||||||||
MINE was a vernal world, delectable with flowers. Unto a phosphor heaven ascended then the sun. I wandered in my sleep through coverts halcyon, Down mystic forest aisles, by streams elate with showers; But now the dells are lorn and silted up with snow; Sere is their loveliness . . . and desolate the bowers. Where are the magic dreams of long ago? O Sun, thou paintest yet the morn's auroral glory. O Stars, your spray is spilt upon the midnight still. Azure and green of Eden, ripe gold upon the hill, Old misty face of Leman, Alps sempiterne and hoary, Could I but see you once my drouthy heart would fill. O flagon of my lake, I drank your wondrous wine; With a promise of glad days Love rocked me to and fro; But now my heart is drained, and Love no more I know. Beggared of stars and sun, the outcast's husks are mine -- Forget, my soul, the dreams of long ago! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...VARIATIONS: 14 by CONRAD AIKEN VARIATIONS: 18 by CONRAD AIKEN LIVE IT THROUGH by DAVID IGNATOW A DREAM OF GAMES by JOSEPHINE JACOBSEN THE DREAM OF WAKING by RANDALL JARRELL APOLOGY FOR BAD DREAMS by ROBINSON JEFFERS GIVE YOUR WISH LIGHT by ROBINSON JEFFERS |
