MERLE, by JOHN GALSWORTHY Poet's Biography First Line: The sea and sky are grey Last Line: Of notes, and take our hearts along! Alternate Author Name(s): Sinjohn, John Subject(s): Birds | |||
THE sea and sky are grey -- As with the grief of those who've mourned; Yet through this drear December day A lonely merle to song has turned. Brave bird, for you no fears! Though to the sun you're strange -- as we, Across the waste of these last years Bereft of all hilarity. Then, bird! be voice for all The sad who have forgotten song. Shake far that trilling lift and fall Of notes, and take our hearts along! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...GLIMPSES OF THE BIRDS by JOHN HOLLANDER GLIMPSES OF THE BIRDS by JOHN HOLLANDER AUDUBON EXAMINES A BITTERN by ANDREW HUDGINS DISPATCHES FROM DEVEREUX SLOUGH by MARK JARMAN A COUNTRY LIFE by RANDALL JARRELL CANADIAN WARBLER by GALWAY KINNELL YELLOW BIRD by KENNETH SLADE ALLING THE CRIPPLE by KARLE WILSON BAKER |
