The stars went out at dead of night Coming to me: Ah! Roses did not blossom late On the bush of my ennui, Nor my beloved meet her fate In our love's ecstasy. To hearken in the deepest night To tears that overwhelm, The nightingale will not hold his song: Why am I not in his realm ... For his beloved does not betray And he dies not on the elm. The stars went out at dead of night Coming to me: Tell her, mother dear, the birds Through spring can faithful be, But put you under ground my love, My twenty years, and me. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...A FRIEND KILLED IN THE WAR by ANTHONY HECHT FOR JAMES MERRILL: AN ADIEU by ANTHONY HECHT TARANTULA: OR THE DANCE OF DEATH by ANTHONY HECHT CHAMPS D?ÇÖHONNEUR by ERNEST HEMINGWAY NOTE TO REALITY by TONY HOAGLAND THE ALTRUIST ORDER, SELECTION by RENE GHIL |
