YOU ASK ME HOW I KNOW, by UNA MOORE GIBSON First Line: You ask me how I know I love, to bare Last Line: How love that outlives life itself is gained. Subject(s): Love | |||
You ask me how I know I love, to bare The secrets of my soul before you yield Your heart; no inmost thought may be concealed, And I, made mute by love, must love declare. You wonder if my love is but a flare Lit by the potent magic that you wield Upon me, or by slender curves revealed And sunlight's amber shining through your hair. Yes, I love all of these, and yet when you Lay fever-racked, with all the beauty drained Out of your face; bereft of charm that drew My earlier love, a naked soul remained Needing my tenderness -- then indeed, I knew How love that outlives life itself is gained. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE INVENTION OF LOVE by MATTHEA HARVEY TWO VIEWS OF BUSON by ROBERT HASS A LOVE FOR FOUR VOICES: HOMAGE TO FRANZ JOSEPH HAYDN by ANTHONY HECHT AN OFFERING FOR PATRICIA by ANTHONY HECHT LATE AFTERNOON: THE ONSLAUGHT OF LOVE by ANTHONY HECHT A SWEETENING ALL AROUND ME AS IT FALLS by JANE HIRSHFIELD ODE: THE MEDITERRANEAN by GEORGE SANTAYANA |
