CHIAROSCURO, by HAROLD WILLARD GLEASON First Line: Still-life she loves - bronze pears and mist-gray pewter Last Line: Of hapless eyes whose fate is to adore her! Subject(s): Love | |||
Still-life she loves -- bronze pears and mist-gray pewter, Slim green amphorae, books all bulk and binding, In most admired disorder grouped to suit her, Artistic joy in mass and contour finding; The shadow of some bowl will so intrigue her That she will scan it, rapt, for hours together, Her bright head tilted -- while my wooing eager Falls flat as banal comment on the weather! Engrossed in cube and sphere, in colors burning Like opalescent fancies drifting o'er her, Her loveliness with new perspectives growing, She lacks the Landseer quality -- of knowing How light and shade best mingle in the yearning Of hapless eyes whose fate is to adore her! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE INVENTION OF LOVE by MATTHEA HARVEY TWO VIEWS OF BUSON by ROBERT HASS A LOVE FOR FOUR VOICES: HOMAGE TO FRANZ JOSEPH HAYDN by ANTHONY HECHT AN OFFERING FOR PATRICIA by ANTHONY HECHT LATE AFTERNOON: THE ONSLAUGHT OF LOVE by ANTHONY HECHT A SWEETENING ALL AROUND ME AS IT FALLS by JANE HIRSHFIELD CONVENTION by HAROLD WILLARD GLEASON |
