Subject(s): Household Employees; Servants; Domestics; Maids

I found it deep in Granny's trunk,
Beneath her Sunday petticoats,
A yellowed paper, old and worn,
Shuffled and lost among her notes.

In girlish writing, round and straight,
It marches brave, across the page,
"My husband Jim's best-liked receipt,
Dressing made with prairie sage."

I followed her receipt one day,
Although I had no glowing fire,
Built by a prairie schooner's door,
Blown by a prairie wind's desire.

Yet somehow in its flavored depths,
I saw a little maiden stand,
And say, "I made your dressing, Jim,"
And touch him with a sun-browned hand.

I saw brown prairies meet the skies,
And love and laughter in their eyes!
