GRANNY'S RECEIPT, by HAZEL GOLDING First Line: I found it deep in granny's trunk Last Line: And love and laughter in their eyes! Subject(s): Household Employees; Servants; Domestics; Maids | ||||||||
I found it deep in Granny's trunk, Beneath her Sunday petticoats, A yellowed paper, old and worn, Shuffled and lost among her notes. In girlish writing, round and straight, It marches brave, across the page, "My husband Jim's best-liked receipt, Dressing made with prairie sage." I followed her receipt one day, Although I had no glowing fire, Built by a prairie schooner's door, Blown by a prairie wind's desire. Yet somehow in its flavored depths, I saw a little maiden stand, And say, "I made your dressing, Jim," And touch him with a sun-browned hand. I saw brown prairies meet the skies, And love and laughter in their eyes! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...IBIS; FOR LORI GOLDENSOHN by NORMAN DUBIE PLAINT OF THE POET IN AN IGNORANT AGE by CAROLYN KIZER LEDA'S HANDMAIDEN by ELEANOR WILNER THE HOUSEKEEPER by ROBERT FROST |
