THE OLD WOODS, by ESTELLE GERALDINE GRIFFIN First Line: Dear woods, of cherished memories Last Line: In sweet memory, shall always dwell. Subject(s): Memory | ||||||||
Dear woods, of cherished memories, Sanctuary, of childhood's golden hours Beneath your tall magnificent trees We gathered sweet wild flowers; Along the placid silvery stream The graceful weeping willows grew, You are in my mind and heart imbued Old woods, that is each year new! Many happy golden summer hours we played; Beneath your green tree's lovely gracious shade. I knew your tender beauty of spring, Your darker deeper varied hues of June. Ah! how my young heart thrilled to sing, Of the beauty, of your dogwood bloom! The chirr-chirr-whirr -- of musical monotony From the unseen players of your summer symphony; Birds calling, twittering, singing, from the trees, The jubilant songs of tree-toads From the luxuriant shelter of leaves, The azure sky, the shade-cooled breeze, Filled my heart with pure sweet ecstasy Ah! ardently, I longed to be a gypsy, To possess a violin, to play a rhapsody Of adoration, and love, on vibrant strings To this paradise, of glorious vivid greens. Old woods! In the sun's full golden ray, In the dewy fragrance of a new-born day, In the star's far faint misty gleam In the mystic beauty of the moon's full beam; I loved you, knew you, caught your magic spell, In my heart your verdant beauty In sweet memory, shall always dwell. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...MEMORY AS A HEARING AID by TONY HOAGLAND THE SAME QUESTION by JOHN HOLLANDER FORGET HOW TO REMEMBER HOW TO FORGET by JOHN HOLLANDER ON THAT SIDE by LAWRENCE JOSEPH MEMORY OF A PORCH by DONALD JUSTICE BEYOND THE HUNTING WOODS by DONALD JUSTICE JESUS IS CALLING by ESTELLE GERALDINE GRIFFIN |
