THE PASSING OF A FRIEND, by JESSIE STEARNS GRIFFITHS First Line: We loved her so! Last Line: And thou art love! Subject(s): Death; Friendship; Dead, The | ||||||||
We loved her so! Each time she came and went She shed a gentle radiance all about, So glad and sweet: -- Her every smile -- her speech, That never uttered harshness, Showed no doubt That in her lovely manner and her grace, Her Lord looked through The shining of her face! We loved her so! So willing and so dear, She ever worked, nor shirked a duty clear -- But gave herself, her time, her prayers, her aid, Her loyalty, her love so unafraid! We loved her so! How can we live each day Without her lovely presence and her smile, Her dear companionship -- her sense of right, Her brave, blithe spirit with us all the while! We loved her so! Dear God in Heaven above, O lead her softly, gently by the hand, And let her rest within the Better Land Where heavenly flowers bloom -- And Thou Art Love! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...A FRIEND KILLED IN THE WAR by ANTHONY HECHT FOR JAMES MERRILL: AN ADIEU by ANTHONY HECHT TARANTULA: OR THE DANCE OF DEATH by ANTHONY HECHT CHAMPS D?ÇÖHONNEUR by ERNEST HEMINGWAY NOTE TO REALITY by TONY HOAGLAND CHAMBER MUSIC: 5 by JAMES JOYCE |
