TO THE LAST HEATH HEN, by
First Line: What brought thee to this fate, lone bird forlorn?
Last Line: And end a chapter in the life earth rears.
Subject(s): Life; Survival

What brought thee to this fate, lone bird forlorn?
Pathetic, seekest thou companions flown?
Was it the fowler's lust that doomed thy kind?
Did ruthless civilization tread thee down?
Or was it nature's stern, quiet working ways,
That made thee sole survivor of thine own?

Thou callest, but no cheery mate replies;
The curse of silence echoes in thine ears.
To thee earth must a sober aspect wear,
A fastness steeped in solitude and fears.
Oblivion soon will swallow thy frail form;
And end a chapter in the life earth rears.
