HIS BIRTHDAY, by KALFUS KURTZ GUSLING First Line: I wonder if he went long, long ago Last Line: I'm glad that she was with him to the last. Subject(s): Birthdays | ||||||||
I wonder if He went long, long ago, Home to His mother when His birthday came, And sat beside her in the home-fire's glow, And held her hand and softly spoke her name? It must be so, for still that longing clings To all of us. Spread net-like on the earth, Our paths are winding and at last each brings Each one of us to her who gave us birth. But some of us must go in memory To kneel beside her chair and kiss her hands, Feeling, though lost to vision she may be, Better than all, she knows and understands. When I recall the home-gate of my past, I'm glad that she was with Him to the last. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...BIRTHDAY (AUTOBIOGRAPHY) by ROBINSON JEFFERS POEM FOR MY TWENTIETH BIRTHDAY by KENNETH KOCH A HAPPY BIRTHDAY by TED KOOSER FOR A SOLDIER'S BIRTHDAY by EVE MERRIAM PICTURE THIS:/ FOR THE 100TH BIRTHDAY OF QUEEN ELIZABETH THE QUEEN MOTHER by ANDREW MOTION POEM FOR MY BIRTHDAY by LISEL MUELLER THE LINCOLN CABIN by KALFUS KURTZ GUSLING |
