HUNGER, by WALT HARPER First Line: We crossed the threshold Last Line: In a world of greed. Subject(s): Hunger | ||||||||
We crossed the threshold Of the pauper's den And stood in wonder At the ways of men. There stood a stove Without any heat, And a cupboard bare Without a thing to eat. Three children rolled On a quilt of red That served at night As a crummy bed. There a woman sat As a humbled mute, With the patience of A dying brute. The husband stood With a pathetic mien, That we should witness This pitiful scene. God, how can there be A wrong or right? When there are empty Bellies day and night. That millions should suffer As these folks do, Should put a curse Upon me and you. With a world of plenty In a world of need, Leaves us hopelessly marooned In a world of greed. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...SEVERAL MEASURES FOR THE LITTLE LOST by NORMAN DUBIE THE CORNUCOPIA OF RED AND GREEN COMFITS by AMY LOWELL BIOLUMINESCENCE: 1.
