TO A DEAD BABE, by VERA ANDREW HARVEY First Line: Farewell, sweet precious babe, my only one! Last Line: For all eternity through sorrow saved! Subject(s): Babies; Children - Lost; Mothers; Infants | ||||||||
Farewell, sweet precious babe, my only one! Alas, to know thy pain but not thy bliss! A wanton e'en may find an infant's kiss, While I, creation's plan revered, feel none. Broken, hope's thread from age-old longing spun! Lord, why should I love's joyous crowning miss? Was it thy plan my crowning should be this -- Anguish? I feebly pray thy will be done. O grant that on Hereafter's golden sands, Which lonely years of human tears have laved, I may once more pick up the severed strands Of mortal love and there receive unscathed Motherhood's diadem from baby hands, For all eternity through sorrow saved! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...A POET TO HIS BABY SON by JAMES WELDON JOHNSON BABYHOOD by ELIZABETH AKERS ALLEN INFANCY by EDMUND JOHN ARMSTRONG BALLAD OF THE LAYETTE by WAYNE KOESTENBAUM A TOAST FOR LITTLE IRON MIKE by PAUL MARIANI THE PAMPERING OF LEORA by THYLIAS MOSS ONE FOR ALL NEWBORNS by THYLIAS MOSS IN THE THRIVING SEASON by LISEL MUELLER |
