ORANGE, by VICTORIA ADELAIDE HARVEY First Line: I've thrilled when I've read of purple and gold Last Line: She had made a little orange frock for me.) | |||
I've thrilled when I've read of purple and gold Worn by princes and kings; Crimson hurts my tortured heart . . . But orange gives my spirit wings. (The altar candles flamed orange the day I heard the might Rheims organ play.) Red throbs with life; yellow is merry; Mauve tells of mysterious things; Lavender brings me perfumed peace . . . But orange . . . orange sings! (I've seen the throat of an oriole Quiver as he sang his soul.) I love the green and the gray of the sea, The laughing blue of the prairie sky, And the silver in the sea-gull's wing . . . But orange . . . orange makes me cry. (My mother died when I was three; She had made a little orange frock for me.) | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...NOT EVEN A MEMORY by VICTORIA ADELAIDE HARVEY TOMORROW by ANNA LETITIA BARBAULD SPOON RIVER ANTHOLOGY: LAMBERT HUTCHINS by EDGAR LEE MASTERS SPOON RIVER ANTHOLOGY: JAMES GARBER by EDGAR LEE MASTERS THE JOY OF WRITING by WISLAWA SZYMBORSKA THE PHANTOM KISS by PAUL LAURENCE DUNBAR THE VICAR OF WAKEFIELD: SONG by OLIVER GOLDSMITH A WORKING PARTY by SIEGFRIED SASSOON |
