SILVERSIDES, by
First Line: Great king salmon, come from the sea
Last Line: Down to the tide flow, down to the sea!
Subject(s): Salmon

Great king salmon, come from the sea,
Come for the bridal, come for the three,
Trysting and mating and death to be!

Lone king salmon, come from the shore,
Come from the spume lift, come from the roar,
Come to a way that returns no more!

Bright king salmon, brave to the sight,
Shade in the shallows and flesh in the light,
Strong in the current and swift in the night!

Lost king salmon, never again
To know the sea and the wiles of men,
Or the fighting strength that sustained him then!

Sore king salmon, languid and spent,
Livid and ill from the wrong element,
Woeful and suffering, why was he sent?

Dead king salmon, cast on the tide,
Bloated and carrion, hapless to ride,
Food for the spawn life for which he died!

Young king salmon, nimble and free,
Growing and going as soon as may be,
Down to the tide flow, down to the sea!
