FILLING, by FRANCES RIDLEY HAVERGAL Poet's Biography First Line: Holy father, thou hast spoken Last Line: Fill us with thyself to-day! Subject(s): God; Prayer | ||||||||
HOLY Father, Thou hast spoken Words beyond our grasp of thought, -- Words of grace and power unbroken, With mysterious glory fraught. Promise and command combining, Doubts to chase and faith to lift; Self renouncing, all resigning, We would claim this mighty gift. Take us Lord, oh, take us truly, Mind and soul and heart and will; Empty us and cleanse us throughly, Then with all Thy fulness fill. Lord, we ask it, hardly knowing What this wondrous gift may be; But fulfill to overflowing, -- Thy great meaning let us see. Make us in thy royal palace Vessels worthy for the king; From Thy fulness fill our chalice, From Thy never-failing spring. Father, by this blessed filling, Dwell Thyself in us, we pray; We are waiting, Thou art willing, Fill us with Thyself to-day! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...UNHOLY SONNET 11 by MARK JARMAN LISTEN, LORD: A PRAYER by JAMES WELDON JOHNSON A PRAYER FOR THE FUTURE by GEORGE BARLOW (1847-1913) DIFFERENT WAYS TO PRAY by NAOMI SHIHAB NYE PRAYER DURING A TIME MY SON IS HAVING SEIZURES by SHARON OLDS WE WHO PRAYED AND WEPT by WENDELL BERRY PRAYERS AND SAYINGS OF THE MAD FARMER by WENDELL BERRY CONSECRATION HYMN by FRANCES RIDLEY HAVERGAL I DID THIS FOR THEE!
