WHAT IS THE SONNET?, by MILAN E. HAWKINS First Line: It is quick, leaping change of northern light Last Line: Beneath bright skies, beyond time's raging roar! Subject(s): Prophecy & Prophets | ||||||||
It is quick, leaping change of Northern light; The anxious mother's first-born's tiny cry; Night's welkin -- stars; the heavenly kindled sky; Sheer, icy mountain's far-flung, warning height; All truthful living, which gives pow'r and might; Conceptions of the sculptor that still lie Within crude marble's depths; the chisel's eye Awakened life reveals, with mystic sight. It is pearl ocean-shells; the morning's blush, Unblemished ruby for the white-souled bride; Young fledgling warblers and the song of thrush; Unconquered lives, despite earth's cruel pride; The painter's skillful brush; the gloaming's hush, With faiths and works of men, that long abide. It is the sacred faith of love's desire; The prismatic beauty of the opal's fire; That prophesying flash within the dark Portentous depths, against those who aspire To find life's hidden source and vital spark; Fair lilies and the Sharon-rose, that mark Strewn pathways for the searchers, who inquire Through templed trees, to hear the morning lark. It is the lonely moan upon the lee; The grating pebbles far along life's shore, After wild, wrecking storm -- through every tree The soughing wind that comes to some no more. It is the tide, bearing our sails to sea, Beneath bright skies, beyond time's raging roar! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...MEDITATION ON SAVIORS by ROBINSON JEFFERS THE PROPHET by LUCILLE CLIFTON THREE SONNETS by RICHARD WILBUR MERLIN'S PROPHESY by WILLIAM BLAKE SPELT FROM SIBYL'S LEAVES by GERARD MANLEY HOPKINS THE NEW EZEKIEL by EMMA LAZARUS A WORM FED ON THE HEART OF CORINTH by ISAAC ROSENBERG SARAH'S CHOICE by ELEANOR WILNER A FRAGMENT FROM THE AGAMEMNON OF AESCHYLOS by AESCHYLUS A MOTHER TO HER WAKING INFANT by JOANNA BAILLIE |
