You were ever praising sweetly The place where you were born; It was on the coast of Mayo And ev'ry wind-swept morn The waters of Killala bay Danced hornpipes at your feet, As you ran o'er the silv'ry sands The morning sun to greet. Your tiny cottage wattle wove Was twined with roses red, And through the open doorway The turf-fire leaping, shed A radiance mellow, holy Turning gray walls to gold And making of the shanachie (story teller) A patriarch of old. You loved this land of quiet hills, The mysteried purple dusk; This land of emerald loveliness Of nightingales and musk. And though you've gone ajourneying Through fairer lands of God I know you'd love to walk tonight A bit of Irish sod. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...KISS GRANDMOTHERS GOOD NIGHT by ANDREW HUDGINS KICKING THE LEAVES by DONALD HALL THE BOOK OF SCAPEGOATS by WAYNE KOESTENBAUM THE GREAT GRANDPARENTS by TED KOOSER SPOON RIVER ANTHOLOGY: COLUMBUS CHENEY by EDGAR LEE MASTERS INCIDENT CHARACTERISTIC OF A FAVOURITE DOG by WILLIAM WORDSWORTH |
