You were ever praising sweetly
The place where you were born;
It was on the coast of Mayo
And ev'ry wind-swept morn

The waters of Killala bay
Danced hornpipes at your feet,
As you ran o'er the silv'ry sands
The morning sun to greet.

Your tiny cottage wattle wove
Was twined with roses red,
And through the open doorway
The turf-fire leaping, shed

A radiance mellow, holy
Turning gray walls to gold
And making of the shanachie (story teller)
A patriarch of old.

You loved this land of quiet hills,
The mysteried purple dusk;
This land of emerald loveliness
Of nightingales and musk.

And though you've gone ajourneying
Through fairer lands of God
I know you'd love to walk tonight
A bit of Irish sod.
