PLUMES OF SMOKE AND STEAM, by AMY MARIE HEFNER First Line: White plumes waving Last Line: What a picture to behold! Subject(s): Railroads; Railways; Trains | ||||||||
White plumes waving Against the blackness of the sky! Interspersed with dots of light Over on the track nearby, Like fairy forms fluttering In our visions of the night, Waving, whirling, stuttering, As they part in myriad streams. Beckoning, gyrating, waving, To haunt us in our dreams. The clouds of smoke and steam Rise and float above the train. The brilliant lights that beam And sparkle through the rain, Draw an etching in black and white Studded with pins of gold, Rising and spreading before our sight, Displaying beauty untold. Smoke and steam, white and black, bright with gold, What a picture to behold! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE RAILWAY by ARTHUR CHRISTOPHER BENSON WHAT WE DID TO WHAT WE WERE by PHILIP LEVINE BURYING GROUND BY THE TIES by ARCHIBALD MACLEISH WAY-STATION by ARCHIBALD MACLEISH TWILIGHT TRAIN by EILEEN MYLES THE CAVEMAN ON THE TRAIN by JOHN FREDERICK NIMS THE HARD TIMES IN ELFLAND; A STORY OF CHRISTMAS EVE by SIDNEY LANIER |
