CHANGE OF ADDRESS, by RUTH EVELYN HENDERSON First Line: Do not delay and do not look behind Last Line: And the fetters will be less strong on some new ground. Subject(s): Love; Memory | ||||||||
Do not delay and do not look behind At the oleander ethereal under the moon. In dark, made velvet with brooding oaks, be blind To memory till you are safe. It is none too soon. The ghosts of love are forging a golden chain. They would link it about your ready hands and feet And you would be glad of the bonds. Remembered pain And remembered joy of love would be deadly sweet. Hold tight your Penates and shelter the holy ember And make no outcry and never look around. You are taking with you all that one should remember And the fetters will be less strong on some new ground. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...MEMORY AS A HEARING AID by TONY HOAGLAND THE SAME QUESTION by JOHN HOLLANDER FORGET HOW TO REMEMBER HOW TO FORGET by JOHN HOLLANDER ON THAT SIDE by LAWRENCE JOSEPH MEMORY OF A PORCH by DONALD JUSTICE BEYOND THE HUNTING WOODS by DONALD JUSTICE LESSON IN POETRY by RUTH EVELYN HENDERSON |
