DESOLATION-A DREAM, by CORIE DAVIS HENTON First Line: You need not pour two cups this morn Last Line: I am alone, alone. ... And growing old! Subject(s): Absence; Desolation; Separation; Isolation | ||||||||
You need not pour two cups this morn, Not this morn, nor ever after. His chair? Yes, yes, just across from me, Its long accustomed place. I'll tell my heart to wait; He'll come anon, he is but late; But noit will stand empty Through all my life's tomorrows! He went away last night, you know. I am alone, alone ... and growing old! A hidden door unclosed, I saw a blinding flash of light Then sudden darkness, darkness that was so still. And he had gone ... and closed the door. Oh, had he left it Ever so little way ajar, I might have followed after. But it will not move Though I beat upon it till my knuckles bleed, And call aloud to him. He does not hear; he will not come. I am alone, alone. ... and growing old! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE EVENING OF THE MIND by DONALD JUSTICE CHRISTMAS AWAY FROM HOME by JANE KENYON THE PROBLEM by CHARLOTTE FISKE BATES WHEN A WOMAN LOVES A MAN by DAVID LEHMAN THIS UNMENTIONABLE FEELING by DAVID LEHMAN |
