MEMORIES, by HATTIE JOSEPHINE HODGSON First Line: There are no friends like the old friends Last Line: There is nothing but memories left. Subject(s): Friendship; Home; Memory; Past | ||||||||
There are no friends like the old friends, No matter where you roam; No home like the old home, Be it palace, hovel, or none But the rented shack on the prairie, Where the latchstring hangs outside, And the old-fashioned motto, "Welcome," Greets you from the entrance wide. If time could only turn backward, And the table of friendship be spread With the dear ones of old gathered round it And the ripple of laughter be heard, How happy would be the reunion -- How the gathering shadows would fade -- How the sunshine of love would brighten The inroads that sorrow has made. If time could only turn backward, Turn backward just once in its flight, And bring back the dear ones who left us If only just for tonight. But the wheels of time ever roll onward, Of our dear ones we still are bereft; The old home still stands on the prairie, There is nothing but memories left. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...FERGUS FALLING by GALWAY KINNELL A TIME PAST by DENISE LEVERTOV LAST THINGS by WILLIAM MEREDITH CHRISTMAS TREE by JOHN FREDERICK NIMS THIS MORNING, GOD by LAURE-ANNE BOSSELAAR |
