First Line: One day I shall like a quiet room
Last Line: That old has come to stay!
Subject(s): Old Age

One day I shall like a quiet room
With dark window shades drawn down,
And never go where violets bloom
In sunny fields beyond the town.
I shall kneel in a crowded church
And feel real close to God;
I shall listen to great orators
And neither yawn nor nod.
March winds will not stir my soul;
April showers cease to thrill;
I shall wear much heavy coats
For winds will thaw and chill.
I will learn to like little words,
An evening by a fireside,
Big books, and most of all,
An early hour to retire.
I shall bend over solemn ledgers
And never think to run away,
Swimming pools will cease to charm,
I'll like things painted grey;
As to whether I'll be satisfied,
Perhaps I shan't say ...
But, oh, I'll know deep down inside
That old has come to stay!
