TO A FRIEND, by H. NELSON HOOVEN First Line: Would that I might speak my heart Last Line: Speechless, white and unaltering to the very end. | |||
Would that I might speak my heart, Speak out straight as a beam of starlight That falls through my open window, clear and unfaltering. You spoke to me not so long ago About things that held you, bound you So close to life, that only bitterness remained. I, too, knew what it was To feel so deeply that I waited alone For the night to come and throw her arms Like shades and shadows over my days And lose my silence in her darkness. And now when it is my turn to speak to you And lift you as I would the seasons above my shoulders, I can find no words at all, Only I am alone with you, And you must understand my silence is not darkness But only a form of starlight, Speechless, white and unaltering to the very end. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...SONG OF AUTUMN by PAUL VERLAINE A SWEET LULLABY by NICHOLAS BRETON UNDERSTANDING by NIXON WATERMAN OPEN THY HEART by JOHANNA AMBROSIUS MONICA'S LAST PRAYER by MATTHEW ARNOLD UNREASONABLE REASON by JOSEPH BEAUMONT TO ONE IN A HOSTILE CAMP by WILFRID SCAWEN BLUNT MAXIMS FOR THE OLD HOUSE: THE PORCH by ANNA HEMPSTEAD BRANCH |
