I CANNOT find this English woodland fair That wakes and breaks in waving loveliness; Its green and virgin beauty moves me less Than some pale form of grief or mute despair; I cannot find an anodyne for care In leaf or budgray sorrows throng and press For me the world is robed in mourning dress, Despite these sun-lashed woods, this diamond air. O fair green-tressed and laughter-loving earth, Is there no solace for our souls' vast need, No refuge echoless of human strife?
