I CANNOT find this English woodland fair
That wakes and breaks in waving loveliness;
Its green and virgin beauty moves me less
Than some pale form of grief or mute despair;
I cannot find an anodyne for care
In leaf or bud—gray sorrows throng and press—
For me the world is robed in mourning dress,
Despite these sun-lashed woods, this diamond air.

O fair green-tressed and laughter-loving earth,
Is there no solace for our souls' vast need,
No refuge echoless of human strife?
What hope awakens at the world's re-birth,
When raven Death upon his scarlet steed
Rides madly through the wonderland of life?
