Clear, limpid waters of Peconic Bay, Dusk, stealing through the still of grove of oak; Among them, in the clearing, shadows cloak Deep window's gloom, where first of moonbeams play While huge, red, tortuous moon's splendrous array Drives west dead day's last gleam, in fellest stroke. Montauk and Orient's gray distant Points convoke. From out beyond the heads the sheen display Spreads silver 'cross Peconic's ceaseless tides. With sails now furled, the small ship rides at anchor; Soft sound of lulling wave -- boat rowed to shore -- House sullen -- in tense atmosphere abides While life-time's myriad aspirations break And memory-pregnant silence yearns to speak. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...MEMORY AS A HEARING AID by TONY HOAGLAND THE SAME QUESTION by JOHN HOLLANDER FORGET HOW TO REMEMBER HOW TO FORGET by JOHN HOLLANDER ON THAT SIDE by LAWRENCE JOSEPH MEMORY OF A PORCH by DONALD JUSTICE BEYOND THE HUNTING WOODS by DONALD JUSTICE THEIR CAROL CALL TO THEE by DAISYMAY CAMPBELL HUBER IN 'DESIGNING A CLOAK TO CLOAK HIS DESIGNS' YOU WRESTED FROM OBLIVION by MARIANNE MOORE |
