SORROW FOR THE DEAD, by LEONIDUS S. HUFFMAN First Line: Other sorrows we try to conceal Last Line: With never a lingering sorrow? Subject(s): Grief; Mourning; Sorrow; Sadness; Bereavement | ||||||||
Other sorrows we try to conceal; Other wounds we endeavor to heal; But we mourn for the dead through the years And oft we bedew their graves with tears. What mother forgets her baby's charms, The darling that perished in her arms, The sweet voice that once through the home rang; And yet, recollection brings a pang! What child forgets mother's tender love, A love like that of heaven above? Oh, when upon life's sea, tempest-tossed, How we think of the mother we lost! Oh, the grave, the grave! Love lingers there! Stricken with grief and burdened with care, Often there we shed affection's tears And there we offer sincerest prayers. Who would turn from that silent portal When closing upon love immortal, Turn with never a tear tomorrow, With never a lingering sorrow? | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...HUNGERFIELD by ROBINSON JEFFERS THE MOURNER by LOUISE MOREY BOWMAN HECUBA MOURNS by MARILYN NELSON THERE IS NO GOD BUT by AGHA SHAHID ALI |
