EPITAPH, by VICTOR MARIE HUGO Poet's Biography First Line: The child was living to laugh and to play Last Line: Is desolate for this one child less! | ||||||||
THE child was living to laugh and to play O Nature, why didst thou take him away? Hast thou not thy birds as the rainbows bright? Thy stars and thy woods, thy lakes and thy skies? Why didst thou take from his mother's eyes, And hide him, 'neath flowers away from sight? No richer thou for this one child more, Nor starlit Nature more glad than before. And the mother's heart where such pain doth press, Where each joy engenders a griefthe heart Which is just as great as thou, Nature, art, Is desolate for this one child less! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...A NEW SONG TO AN OLD TUNE by VICTOR MARIE HUGO A NIGHT IN JUNE by VICTOR MARIE HUGO A UN PASSANT by VICTOR MARIE HUGO A UNE FEMME by VICTOR MARIE HUGO AFTER THE BATTLE by VICTOR MARIE HUGO AN EVENING SCENE by VICTOR MARIE HUGO AN OLD SONG OF A YOUTHFUL TIME by VICTOR MARIE HUGO CHILDHOOD by VICTOR MARIE HUGO |
