A RAIN SKETCH, by MARY KATE HUNTER First Line: I like to feel the long slim train Last Line: Ploughs onward through the rain. Subject(s): Railroads; Rain; Railways; Trains | ||||||||
I like to feel the long slim train Is nosing through the rain; One is so snug and satisfied To sit and stare outside. Through polka-dotted window panes I see the rain-swept lanes; The furrows tiny rivers seem, Beside the tracks a stream. I scan the faces in the car -- Dismal as without, they are. How man can build a long slim train, Yet be oppressed by rain! I like to feel the long slim train Keeps nosing through the rain; Keeps speeding on the iron trail Through wind and water-veil, With all its vibrant, rhythmic swing -- Man's thought is on the wing. His genius fashioned the moving train, He guides it through the rain, As pilot loves its leashed power Be it in storm or shower; Not all the elements can tame Man's spirit, whence it came. The sinuous, moving, long slim train Ploughs onward through the rain. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE RAILWAY by ARTHUR CHRISTOPHER BENSON WHAT WE DID TO WHAT WE WERE by PHILIP LEVINE BURYING GROUND BY THE TIES by ARCHIBALD MACLEISH WAY-STATION by ARCHIBALD MACLEISH TWILIGHT TRAIN by EILEEN MYLES THE CAVEMAN ON THE TRAIN by JOHN FREDERICK NIMS |
