THIS SPARK, by HELEN HAYS HUTTON First Line: What wonder if my memory Last Line: "or ""immortality." Subject(s): Life; Memory | ||||||||
What wonder if my memory Would roam the sea or land, Would soar across an azure sky Or grovel in the sand, When in my body glows a spark That through all time has burned; From throbbing life to throbbing life Long eons ere man learned To stand erect, to fly, to swim Or crawl on slimy sod It came, a steady undimmed flame, From origin in God. So long as I may hold this spark It matters not to me If man would call it "Chromosome" Or "Immortality." | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...MEMORY AS A HEARING AID by TONY HOAGLAND THE SAME QUESTION by JOHN HOLLANDER FORGET HOW TO REMEMBER HOW TO FORGET by JOHN HOLLANDER ON THAT SIDE by LAWRENCE JOSEPH MEMORY OF A PORCH by DONALD JUSTICE BEYOND THE HUNTING WOODS by DONALD JUSTICE AFTER THE RAIN by HELEN HAYS HUTTON |
