CONSUMMATUM EST, by DIANA JAMES First Line: Light is more beautiful for it is dying Last Line: They only knew the dust of their desires. Subject(s): Desire; Love | ||||||||
Light is more beautiful for it is dying, Peace is more beautiful that doth depart, Daylight more lovely with the evening Radiance that blinds the tired heart. The summer time is richer with more pain Locked in the white inexorable hold Of winter, and the lifting of the rain Is dawn again and wonder to the old. The dawn of love is stranger than the dawn, The light of love more shining than the stars, Yet when the lovers' season was outworn They only knew the dust of their desires. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE INVENTION OF LOVE by MATTHEA HARVEY TWO VIEWS OF BUSON by ROBERT HASS A LOVE FOR FOUR VOICES: HOMAGE TO FRANZ JOSEPH HAYDN by ANTHONY HECHT AN OFFERING FOR PATRICIA by ANTHONY HECHT LATE AFTERNOON: THE ONSLAUGHT OF LOVE by ANTHONY HECHT A SWEETENING ALL AROUND ME AS IT FALLS by JANE HIRSHFIELD |
