Last Line: Of that jewel in the stream!
Subject(s): April; Spring

It is April by the river!
Here, the misty air's aquiver
With the scents and calls of spring:
Hosts of meadow larks and redwings
Bubble joy from reeds and fenceposts;
And the glory that is sifting
Through the rain sets orchards drifting,
Drifting down the shadowed stream;
Here, the mossy, rotten fences
Are as magic runes of beauty
Scrawled by sunlight on the river
Tremulent and all ashiver
From the rain's long, slanting sting;
While that plain, red barn, inverted,
Like a huge king-opal flashes
Rapturous fires to my senses.
Through my soul, God, send the gleam
That has changed the barn's harsh brilliance
To the lovesome, rippling laughter
Of that jewel in the stream!
