THE WISE, by FRANCES SMITH JOHNSON First Line: Some men have left us who had much to give Last Line: Exhort adventurous souls to grow more wise. Subject(s): Wisdom | ||||||||
Some men have left us who had much to give, Whose lavish minds were stored with ripened thought, Whose avocation had become to live In search of truth, therefore by others sought. These have gone on beyond the garden wall. The poor stand waiting by the cloistered door, Ears all attuned to catch the least footfall -- The rose grows up the gate that swings no more. Oh let me cry aloud that truth lives on -- Let men come forth from out the waiting crowd; Nor think because men die, that faith is gone And wisdom wrapt forever within a shroud. Those who have fathomed space with shining eyes Exhort adventurous souls to grow more wise. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...HOPE IS NOT FOR THE WISE by ROBINSON JEFFERS SEVEN TWILIGHTS: 5 by CONRAD AIKEN SONG: NOW THAT SHE IS HERE; FOR JOE-ANNE by HAYDEN CARRUTH WISE: HAVING THE ABILITY TO PERCEIVE AND ADOPT THE BEST by LUCILLE CLIFTON WISDOM COMETH WITH THE YEARS by COUNTEE CULLEN FOR RANDALL JARRELL, 1914-1965 by NORMAN DUBIE THE MORTAL WORDS OF ZWEIK by PHILIP LEVINE CHAMBER MUSIC: 6 by JAMES JOYCE |
